Sonny Williams - Biography

I have been involved within the HIV sector for over ten years, from volunteering work to paid employment. I have held various positions within the AIDS Council of New South Wales (ACON) and was employed for seven years with them before moving to Melbourne to take up my current position.

Currently I am employed by People Living with HIV/AIDS Victoria Incorporated as the Executive Officer. I have been able to build on the organisation’s capacity towards expansion within programmatic and financial objectives, and successfully recruit and build motivated teams. I possess a keen ability to manage people during periods of change and to manage all levels within an organisation.

I would classify my strengths as being an expert in project work and budgeting, possessing excellent communication, team work and collaboration abilities, with a capacity to engage effectively with membership, community and client groups. Similarly I am accomplished in consulting with the HIV/AIDS sector and government at various levels.  I have extensive networking and relationship development skills and have built team environments where members feel supported to provide the best possible result.

I believe in involving members at all levels yet allowing space for individuals to achieve, grow and learn. My style is participative with a focus on developing and empowering others to achieve the business objectives.

The skills I bring to a role are:

  • Hands-on experience in community based organisations
  • Project management with an ability to steer the achievements of organisational projects.
  • Strong negotiation skills to reach agreements that are supported by all parties
  • A solid work management ethic that provides an ability to organise work for self and/or others, and a capacity to monitor progress and take remedial action
  • Extensive practical learning skills with an ability to assimilate and apply new knowledge or facilitate others in their learning capabilities
  • Information monitoring capability to identify, collect and review information for use in tasks or projects
  • An extensive knowledge of the HIV/AIDS sector
